Tiscali has experienced radical business transformation during its 17-year history. Its foundation is built on providing telephone services, yet Tiscali's trajectory and ability to shift strategy are what set this independent service provider apart from its competitors. Tiscali grew rapidly through internet access services, expanding into 14 European countries. But market turbulence soon forced the company to rethink its aggressive acquisition strategy.
In 2005, Tiscali pivoted quickly, reprioritising its Italian customer base and returning its focus to innovation. Tiscali saw an opportunity to apply its expertise in telecom and managed IT services to break in to the business-to-business (B2B) market with enterprise-class cloud services.
Tiscali teamed up with NetApp to upgrade its infrastructure. It became the first adopter of the NetApp® clustered Data ONTAP® operating system in Italy and laid the foundation for a data fabric that gives customers choice and control in the hybrid cloud. Tiscali now is able to host multiple cloud services on a single, scalable storage platform while offering zero-downtime SLAs. Customer data is protected with secure multi-tenancy capabilities. All of this is achieved with 50% less data centre space and half the IT budget.
Tiscali’s evolution from a provider of consumer utilities to a provider of enterprise-class cloud services reached a significant milestone in 2015 when Tiscali was awarded a seven-year contract with the Italian government.
